perhaps we have a situation with probabilities.

in the event of a catastrophic engine failure the probability of oiling the
track is high, in any failure mode.

could it be that the tailpipe may contain as oil as the catch can.....and send
a message to the driver more quickly to pull to the side when you see a huge
oil fog behind you.

The Alexander's and Kramer's have experienced a failures that went beyond the
catch can. Kramer's was spectacular with a flash of fire followed by #197
doing a dance behind him.  My failure was less spectacular, but benignly sent
two or three cars slithering off of Turn 5 at Road America.

Neither event would have been helped by a catch can.

I have seen the results of a holed piston which in less than one lap at Road
Atlants pumped at least 3 qts. Of oil out of the engine into the catch can
and into the engine bay and floor board of the car.  Could your vacum system
take care of this or does the excess oil just dump onto the track through
the exhaust?
