Chuck, if you're going to race it, the tech guys want an enclosed box with a 
lid.
You can buy one or make your own. JEG'S and others sell boxes, some for 
marine use.
Mine's home-built with a very secure holding system and a lid. The box is 
actually bolted to the floor in the trunk. Cables are also well insulated.
