Greg, use permatex #3 or super 300 on the brake ring.
I learned at a fairly young age to use a gasket cement on one side of the
gaskets, like High Tack, and a coating of grease on the other.
That way if you goof it will come back apart with no problem and the gasket
will remain in place.
