I have to say I am responsible for all electrics at one of the big parts=20
suppliers here in Europe for classic british cars. I have to check all=20
customer complains with all electrical parts.
The company I am working for sells gear reduction starters not only for=20
Austin-Healeys, but also for all other marques like Triumphs, MGs, Jaguars,=
=20
etc.
I have to deal with many customer complains regarding gear reduction=20
starters. Some do not gear in correctly (gear in from the werong side and=
=20
damage the gears), but mainly they have a very poor reliabilty. Most gear=
=20
in, but do not turn any more or lost power. My recommendation to all=20
customers, Have your old original unit repaired.
Perhaps in the US your gear reduction starters are of better quality. But=
=20
here in Europe I can only say, stay away from gear reduction starter=20
motors.

The modern starter certainly does turn faster, however the engine usually=
=20
does not noticeably although it will sound like it does.
    * Leaving out the maths & ratios etc, it seems plain to me that, if the
starter turns faster, then so must the engine=E2=80=A6.?.
It may turn over the engine faster then the old tired starter did but that=
=20
is not a good comparison. You have to compare to as new starters!!!!
    * That makes sense. My original worked well. I put in new brushes
etcetc as a precaution before a long trip, it being only about 3
years out of the box. Anyhow, fast as it was, it was very much slower
      than its WOSP replacement.
    * I=E2=80=99d say that one of the disadvantages is that starting my BT7=
 now
sounds like starting a Toyota bread van. (Not that you have to listen
      for long.)
    * Apart from that, it=E2=80=99s worked faultlessly for the last =E2=80=
=93 I forget
      precisely =E2=80=93 4 years.
    * Isn=E2=80=99t there some lore that BJ8s=E2=80=99 big SUs benefit from=
 a faster
starter? More fuel being sucked in to faster moving pistons=E2=80=A6=
