John,
I can update you on the salt.  I just returned from a day dragging.  The
long course is good to the seven although a bit rough in some very dry
spots.  From the seven on it is wet, soft,wheels pull up the surface and it
is not going to be good to race on unless we get some very warm, dry weather
with s brisk breeze.  Shutting down there will be edgy.  The short course is
90% asphalt hard and like a very patched asphalt road.  It caused the
Gatorade to splash out of the bottle in my hand even though the level was
two inches from the top and I was just trying to hold it steady.  You will
want a clearance of two inches or more on those air "damns" on that course. 
A drag with two 55 gallon barrels of water for weight didn't cut the surface
at all.
