When you mention pubs like Vanity Fair I thought
sure you would hit on how LSR is still a true
family sport. In so many cases, pop doesn't pack
up and leave the family behind for a weekend of
"man-sports". Mom and kids are often a very
active part of the pit crew, if not the entire
pit crew, even though this is certainly a "manly
sport". There are also many moms and daughters
out there in the fire suits, strapped into the
cockpit of some of these cars, and it's not just
to take pictures - - it's to set records! After
we set a record at Maxton last fall, while
stopped at a truck stop for dinner somewhere in
middle Georgia, my wife and daughter slipped out
while my son and I finished our coffee. When we
joined them in the parking lot, there were about
a half dozen truckers gathered around our
trailerd race car, checking the car out and
watching my daughter who was just putting the
finishing touches on new fender lettering which
read "Making it Happen", followed by my wife's
name as crew chief, and my son and daughter
listed as crew members. We all share equally in
the pride of setting a record with that old
jalopy.
