Years ago I used to go to The Popular Hotrodding race at US 131 with Maury
Rose, Jr. It was in 79 or 80 after making our first couple trial passes on
Friday we head back to the Red Roof Inn to get cleaned up before going out to
dinner. While waiting for others to finish up getting ready were standing on
the balcony drinking a cold one or two when up walks Don "The Snake"
Prudhomme.It seems he need a light for his smoke and asked if anyone had a
spare book of matches. I said sure no problem. I hand him the matches and he
thanked me for them. These matches were special to me as my folks had got
them for me while on a trip to Las Vegas.Thats when I let my Dad and others
that the match book that I just handed him was from Mable's Whore House
(where the customer comes first). Well, Don walks back toward his room and
decided to have a smoke out on the balcony. So he opens the book of matches
up and puts flame to his smoke, then he does what everyone would do and looks
at the cover of the matches. Well, the double take he did was one for the
memory books. By the time he looks back at me I'm about to fall off the
balcony from laughing so hard. The next day I made it a point to stop by his
pit area and it swamped and he's talking to one of his crew so I say kind of
loud Don you got a light? And he glances over then realize that it's me and
justs point his finger and smiles.
