It is good to hear there are other "purists" out there. Yamaha's motto
"Different strokes for different folks" applies here, I suppose. I have
never tried to diminish the goals of those who choose to jump in
someone's car and enter the 200 MPH Club, but that just was not an
option for me. I did have the opportunity to accomplish membership on
more than one occasion by driving another car or inserting someone's
engine, it just didn't fit my agenda. As the song goes, "I did it my way."

BTW Lynn St. James can be added to the list of people from other racing
venues, also I believe Parnelli Jones tried one year to enter the Club
and failed to make it, there was a lady diagnosed with terminal cancer
that drove Ward's Opel, and I'm sure many others over the years made one
shot deals.

We just don't fully appreciate how fortunate we are to be able to
pursue this sport until we see how far others will go to get a ride down
the Salt. I'm impressed when people like Gartlits, Unser, St. James, and
others, whose accomplishments we respect,. feel this is something they
must do.
