Scott, I could be dead wrong, and let's hear what the real stock
flathead experts say, but I seem to recall that the late flathead
distributor advance is vacuum only, no centrifugal.  It advances to the
modest full advance (what, maybe 20 degrees total?) whenever the vacuum
is high in the manifold, and retards whenever the vacuum is lowered by a
load on the engine.  It sounds like your dist. has a big vacuum leak in
the advancer diaphragm, causing a big leak when you attach the hose,
almost killing the engine, and you fix it by squeezing the hose shut.
So I'd suspect the dist. advancer unit.  Bill
