I wonder if we would have as much fun doing things around the house and yard
for the same time and effort as we expend at the salt? I think it's the
people who make the difference. I can't think of a more interesting group
of innovative "oddballs" to know and appreciate for their unique qualities.
I think that energy is what drives us for the next year to return and enjoy
the Bonneville experience in all it's facets.

After the Salt Talks and before I slid under the tonneau on my pickup to
sleep sometime Monday morning, I went into Wendover to put posters up for
World of Speed. Ran into Jack Costella at the Smith's supermarket as well
as several other racers. As I worked my way back across town I saw a couple
of Utah friends in the parking lot of the Rainbow Casino. A bunch of street
rodders were hanging there and getting an update from some guys who were on
their way back from Hot August Nights. The upshot is I met several guys
from Calgary, Alberta, Canada who had made the long trek to the salt. Had a
nice visit with Dave Ness who is enthusiastic and involved in hot rodding
even though he is now in a wheel chair as a result of an auto accident.
They're scheming about next year and a race car. And that on Canadian
dollars!

As I drove back to Salt Lake Monday evening I was mentally reviewing the
people I had met and visited with in the previous 24 hours. Most are people
who would not be in the normal path of my life. You have to go out of
comfortable areas to know them. All are fascinating in their own ways.
None are boring. It gives another reason to go back to Bonneville. Another
part of catching Salt Fever.

I took a neighbor out with me on Tuesday. We watched the record runs over
our Red Flame sausage and egg sandwiches. Then visited up and down the pits
after racing started, dropping off some photos I had printed off from the
previous day's batch. The atmosphere was so energized, everyone so pleasant
and helpful for my novice friend, the color and sounds, the sheer size of
everything really got to him. Anther case of Salt Fever ... he'll be out
helping at World of Speed.
