A very honest assessment.

Up to now, we've mainly heard "idealized" views of LSR competition.

Doesn't mean that both views can't be true. People are all different, and
landspeed racers are people. I have met many landspeed racers like those
that were first described-- those that will help you to break their records,
and enjoy doing it. I hope that I become one of those.

I'm not sure I've met any as bad as the ones Murf describes below in LSR,
but I've always suspected that there must be a few like that out there,
since I've met people like that in other venues.

I HAVE met a few LSR competitors who place a very high value on their
records-- who have worked very hard to get them (mainly using their own
resources and ingenuity)-- and who can't find it in their hearts to be so
generous as to share tools, parts, or hard-earned knowledge with their
competitors. They are not as easy to like as the many open-handed,
open-hearted ones in this sport, but I think it's easy to understand why
they would want to protect "their turf".

Doesn't mean we shouldn't "take them on"-- the good ones, the bad ones, and
those in between. In the end, the record book will prove who is right, who
deserves the honor. If not this year, then next year. That's competition.
No Board Room B.S. Here, everybody has an equal chance to prove themselves.
That's why this sport is better than the rest of life.

I can't speak for Bonneville as I've only been racing
at Maxton for the past couple years, but I have to add
an opposing view. I agree, real racers don't get
upset, they congratulate you, applaud you, encourage
you & help you. (Thats how Twin Jugs Racing operates)
I really dig that about LSR BUT there are a few that
don't work that way. There is a select little group
that not only targets certain records they target
certain individuals and take the whole record conquest
very personal. They don't help you, they send spies
over to find out what you're up to, they look for hand
outs, show up unprepared assuming they can beg &
borrow whatever they need & never offer to lend a
hand. But, the fun part is, we know who they are & it
just makes the accomplishment that much sweeter when
you know you've succeeded in obtaining your record and
it pisses them off! Don't kid yourself, they are out
there but fortunately for us there are very few of
them!
