You're right but there are also special grades of RTV that are designed for
electrical use. Those RTV grades do not contain acetic acid and don't smell
like vinegar. If you polish a piece of copper and dab some RTV on it, take a
look after a week or so to see if it has corroded. If it has, its not one of
the "Electrical Grade" RTVs.

BTW, don't use run-of-the-mill RTV on a fishtank, either. It contains a very
small amount of arsenic and tropical fish don't survive it too well.

Just remember not to use a silicone sealer like RTV or salastic.  It has an
acid base which will cause corrosion
