I've got a question about the safety of land-speed racing. My wife has some
concerns that I would like to put to rest, and I found that I really didn't
have any hard numbers to give her. I've been very open with her about the
goings on, and she knows that we've lost or injured a few racers.
Now, for sure, the most dangerous thing I do is jump in my daily driver twice a
day and spend 35 minutes on the local toll way. If 'ever' there was a place
for a roll cage, helmet, fire suit, and 7 point harness.......but that's a
different story.
Does anyone have event data for, the number of runs each year, number of
injuries (not counting busted knuckles - say, something that requires a
doctor's attention (stitches, fractures, etc.)), and number of fatalities? I'm
sure there are good years and not so good, so a few recent years of data would
be great.
My gut feel is that this is one of, if not the, safest racing venue, and
probably a lot safer than a lot of things I'm already doing. But I've got to
admit that I don't have any numbers to back that up.
A bit of a delicate question. I hope I've couched the question so as not to
offend anyone.
Also, I'm sure that mention of this will raise the eyebrows of my life
insurance agent. Any advice? Rider on the policy, separate event insurance,
or no coverage?
