If your concern is moisture or heat or the fluid eating the paint, why not use 
synthetic brake fluid?

I use DOT 5 Synthetic....not so messy. I would think that ATF 
wouldn't withstand heat as well as brake fluid....but then our brakes 
don't get really hot at the salt.....normally.
