I saw a comment on the SAE site several years ago about a single cylinder lab motor used in a feasibility study that had solenoid controlled valves. Also a comment about one using hydraulic cylinders for valve control. Looked ideal for a diesel because at low power settings just enough air can be let into the cylinder to support combustion without knocking. A quiet diesel ??.
