Hi, Don't mean to butt in but leaded fuel did raise octane level and did have
a little lub qualities of the valve face and seat only. Most unleaded fuels
today have a additive for lub. Keep in mind that octane level is nothing more
than a fuels ability to resist detonation at a certain pressure and temp. If
you raise the pressure and temp (by a hop-up) you will need to raise the
octane level of the fuel to get the most out of the engine. Lead is not the
only way to do that. Their are octane enhancers that do not contain lead. If
you have a CAT or an 0-2 sensor on the car you can not use lead. An alcohol
based additive is better for street use.
Did the engine builder correct the dist. advance curve after the engine build?
Any alterations to an engine make the mixture and advance curve need a
correction. These changes must be done with the fuel you decide to use. You
can do this after the engine is back in the car with a knock sensor system
like MSD part # 8964. You should run the tests with a slightly rich mixture
and start with total advance first and work your way down through the advance
curve under load.
