Sounds to me like a Dynaplastics top. What you described is almost 
exactly what I found on a 1975 Spitfire 1500 at a used car lot not far 
from me (in an add I posted to several lists earlier this week). Don't 
know if Dynaplastics still exists, and it wouldn't break my heart if 
they DIDN'T still service these tops -- they are pretty ugly.
