I'm confused about my '59MGA engine number.

My workshop manual and Moss catalog both show the same code example
15GBUH123456 and the illustration in the workshop manual shows this stamped
on the cylinder block plate stating it's a (later model) example.

My engine number is BP15HGC3409 The illustration in the workshop manual
shows a second cylinder block plate and states that it's an (earlier model).
This plate has a BP15GB22837 example number. What I can't figure out is what
does the HGC in my engine # mean? I find no reference to the "C" at all. The
workshop manual says 1st Prefix letter H=Miscellaneous special or is it the
H=High compression as per the 3rd Group # . . . this is VERY confusing.

Also a '59 is supposed to have a mechanical tach, right? and it's supposed
to connect to the drivers side rear of the engine I'm told. One would think
the back of the cam would connect to something that would allow connection
of the tach cable.  Mine has nothing to connect the tach to. Zip, nada. From
the  transmission bellhousing to the top of the head there is nothing except
one freeze plug. The head has a 15 cast in the back of it indicating it's a
1500.
 . . . . any ideas?

The breather on the top of the valve cover toward the front, between the oil
filler and the front valve cover bolt is for what use?  Is something
supposed to be connected to it? A hose going somewhere?

Lastly (I know, thank God) there's a spring about 4" long wound tight a bit
bigger around than a pencil fastened to the hood release rod a bit rearward
of the the rear SU. I don't think it's a throtle return spring as it can't
go far enough forward (because of the supports holding the hood release rod)
to be in position for that duty. But it looks factory and the other end is
connected to nothing. Any thoughts appreciated.
