It's the old supply and demand.  As stated by someone else, lots more
MGBs got shipped to the U.S. than to AU. (The Brits probably figured that
ozzies didn't know how to drive anything other than a land-cruiser.)
 There is also the factor that they are not American cars.  This list
notwithstanding, non-American cars are simply not as valued by the
general public (I'm not talking about people who can afford and appreciate
a Buggati) in America.
 U.K. citizens are much more appreciative of their own heritage.
 And lastly, EVERYTHING is more expensive and so the relative cost of
an old collectible is driven up by what the market is willing to bear.
Where gasoline can reach $5+ a gallon, what's a few thousand for an old
car?  What is the relative cost of a F**d Escort in each country? (Taking
into account that it is not even the same car in each country, but
services approximately the same market segment.)
