Chris,
Bob at Brit-Tek has been very good to me, so I would take his advice
as being reliable.
As for the advance, my distributer loosened up on me once, and was a
good 35 or 40 degrees advanced, with no problems, but I have the old,
large-chamber head and new large-dish pistons, so my compression
ratio is probably down in the low 7's. I wouldn't think you'd do any
harm until you actually got full combustion while the piston was
still on the upstroke. You stop seeing performance improvements
well before that, though. I don't have any information on flame
propagation delay for these engines, so I can't quote any specific
advance numbers where you'd be doing harm, but I think it would
manifest itself at idle first, and hence be easy to detect.
