Hi Dave,
Tubeless tires will work fine on the TD, in my experience with a set
of radials that I ran for 5-6 years. The disk wheels are air tight, so
you can avoid tubes unless the tire maker requires them.
I learned at the tech inspection at GOF that the Club thinks tubes are
necessary. I have them now in a set of four Firestone 5.60x15s, though
Firestone doesn't require their use in this installation.
There were good reasons to eliminate tubes. I suppose that the reason
for the safety check requiring them is that most people today are running
radials, and the radials adhere so much better to the road that there is
a possibility that one might roll the tire off the rim and lose air. To
offset that, though, is the possibility that when the tire rolls off the
rim the tube pokes out, then chafes and blows out within a couple more
miles. Blowouts are rare with Tubeless.
Would appreciate thoughts from others familiar with this dilemma.
