European definitions:

sedan: two of four door car with a distinct boot or trunk
(three-box design), originally from a carried chair named after
the French town Sedan, later a horse-drawn coach with the bagage
on the rear

hatchback: two-box design, but not always with an odd number of
doors. The wonderful and self-lightening Alfasud only gained a
hatch in later versions

coupé: two-box design with two doors and a relatively low
roofline, sometimes derived from a sedan but much reengineered,
sometimes a model in its own right. Luxury winning from sporting
aspects these days. May or may not have a third door. From the
French 'cut off' so pronunciation is COU-PAY not KOOP. The
British had to do it different again of course, and built the
wonderful Rover P5 coupé with four doors.

As the famous French actor Gene Gabbin always said: Mercy Bowkoop
for your attention.
