Mike - the gas gauge ground only supplies the panel lamps, not the gauge 
itself.  It 
has a 'stabilised' 12v (actually 12v switched on and off a couple of times a 
second) on 
one terminal and a resistance ground from the tank transmitter on the other.  
The 
electric temperature and oil pressure gauges are the same.  If none of them are 
working 
but the tach, heater fan etc are then the stabiliser, or its connections, is 
probably 
the culprit.  The stabiliser has 12v in (green, fused ignition) and light 
green/green 
out.  The stabiliser itself has to be bolted to a good ground to supply the 
correct 
voltage.
