I've been watching this thread and also think it could be a bunch of things
and most of them are bad -- and dangerous. Basically, the rear axle is
moving and you should go figure out why.

I once was looking at a pretty nice B/GT for sale around here. A cheap
re-spray and an interior kit did wonders for walk-up appeal. But it was so
rusty under the sills that the front, left spring hanger was almost
completely gone and that corner of car was wandering around on the axle. It
was immediately apparent just backing it out of the driveway that things
were shifting around. The woman selling the car was tired of people trying
to offer her low-ball cash offers because she knew what a great little car
she had. . .

That car was just one high-speed railroad crossing away from the crusher.
