Based on my experience with a broken release bearing I would say it was the
master cylinder. I say this because two pumps on the clutch pedal were
sufficient to blow the piston out of the end of the slave cylinder, because
there was nothing to push it back to its normal resting position.
Before you dismantle anything get it up on ramps and with someone pumping
the clutch pedal, measure the travel at the lever-arm/push-rod pivot. It
should be about 5/8". If it is significantly less than this, and/or
varying, then it is the m/c. If it is consistently 5/8", then it is indeed
something inside the bellhousing.
If it is the m/c, change the hose and the slave as well. And for a painless
refilling procedure where bleeding is not reuired have a look at

down to 'bleeding'.
