OK, for those who were hanging out for this...
The alternator (newly 'rebuilt' almost twelve months ago to the week
before I went on a drive across the country) did a bearing and
disintegrated internally. Shortened the shaft and was, basically,
non-repairable.
New alternator and all is well again.
Fantastic, eh?
