I used to run the Crane optical EIS, and found it very sensitive to the
adjustment you mention.  If the gap is too large, the light spreads over
too large an area and screws up the dwell, not allowing the coil to
fully charge which resuts in a weak spark that affects performance
dramatically.  That little gap acts as a shutter, and must be adjusted
to provide a very precise burst of focused light to fire the coil as it
spins past the sensor.  

Try to figure out how to get the gap where it needs to be before
fiddling with anything else.  If you can't lower the sensor, raise the
rotating disc.
