Seeing as how your problem seems to be shifting *out* of first I think you
can ignore the clutch and/or hydraulics as this makes shifting *in*
difficult - and on non-synchro gears causes terrible grinding.  Yes I know a
dragging clutch makes it harder to get it out of gear but Sue's successful
performance of a 'gentle wiggle' would not make any difference to a dragging
clutch.  When my MGB is hot it is sometimes a little reluctant to come out
of third unless I pull the lever to one side a little (half a wiggle?), but
then it has always done it in my ownership so it is an undocumented feature.
