And if they *are* shorting out to each other they are quite likely to do so
to the gear lever itself and then cook your loom!  Fit an in-line, you
should be able to do this at the mass of bullet connectors where the
firewall joins the LH inner wing, where 3 or 4 white/browns join together in
a double connector.
