If there is lateral movement between the track rods and the housing in the
straight-ahead position but not to either side then the rack would appear to
be worn requiring replacement but this is unusual.  If the play occurs at
the sides as well as straight-ahead then adjusting the damper shims to see
if it can be eliminated would be the next logical step, lost motion or no.
