The anti-rust and anti-corrosive additives in antifreeze only last about
2 years.  They are "sacrificial" chemicals.  After that, the coolant
acts like its pure water except for the freezing point.  From then on,
rust, scale, aluminum oxide etc. accumulates.


If the coolant is nice and clean yet at the end of two years, you can
just add a "water pump lubricant and anticorrosion" additive to the
existing coolant.  It's about as expensive as antifreeze.  Some owners
in the south used to never use antifreeze, but did need the additive.
