Ok. If you're sure.

My Mazda was having terrible trouble about a year ago. I was absolutely
sure that it was the fuel injection.  The dealer found a wire (I think
it was Ve+) on the coil had a bad connection.

I wouldn't think the top part is going to be it. That's the dashpot.
What it is a vaccuum chamber that raises to keep a constant air speed 
thru the carb and allow more fuel in by the tapper of the needle in the 
jet.

The float bowl would be my bet. Sticking needle valve or clogged jet.
