Another aspect of that bad habit: I'm driving down the thoroughfare and 
somebody roars up to the stop sign on a cross-street. Not knowing if 
this idiot is going to stop, I slow down so I can miss him if he doesn't 
stop. This means he has to wait longer to enter the main street, since 
it takes me longer to get past and out of the way. So, the habit is not 
only stupid, it takes him longer than if he had approached the stop sign 
in a manner that signaled his intention to stop, so it's counterproductive.
