Yes, I used to use straight 40W and even 50W in my first MGB. That was well 
over twenty five years or so ago when I was a bit skeptic of the new modern 
multi-viscosity oils. I don't see any problem if the climate is in the 
tropics where the high and low seldom vary by more than 10-20 degrees F 
during the day. Back when I used the 40W oil, multi-viscosity was a newer 
innovation and straight weight oils were common. I'd be hard pressed to 
find any straight weight oils around here (Montana) anymore and that even 
applies to gear oil where 90W has been replaced with "75w/90w".

I should mention too that I was a chemist who ended up doing oil testing 
and in the process, I overcame my skepticism of multi-viscosity oil.
