As all have said, replacing the shock absorber is a pretty
straightforward job - 1 bolt through the trunnion, 4 bolts holding the
shock absorber to the car. Did it last week between putting kids to bed
and getting supper.

If this John Campbell is as useless as you suggest, he may well not have
replaced the bush in the trunnion, in which case now is the time to do
it! I found my old one came out quite easily (using a G-clamp to press
it out), the new one (standard rubber) was a nightmare to get in - it
needs to be all the way in before you can get the trunnion into position
between the arms of the shocker. I developed a workaround as follows:

1. Get the bushes in as far as you can - I smeared with vaseline, and
used a G-clamp to press them in.

2. Loosen the bolt that holds the two arms of the shock absorber
together.

3. Find a bolt that fits through the holes at the end of the shock
absorber, that is longer than the gap the trunnion needs to fit in,
along with a nut. Screw the nut onto the bolt, then put the bolt into
the space the trunnion should go in - with both bolt head and nut on the
INSIDE of the arms. Then you can unscrew the nut and force the arms
apart enough to get the trunnion between them.

4. Remove the nut, push the trunnion the rest of the way in place.
Fitting and tightening the trunnion bolt will force the bushes the rest
of the way into place.

5. Don't forget to re-tighten the bolt that holds the two arms of the
shock absorber.
