Well, that may sound logical, but the backup light switch on the
transmission is the exact same type of switch as the OD lockout switch
(which "locks out" the OD in reverse, 1st, and 2nd, and 3rd in later models)
and is activated in the identical manner (by the transmission rods), so it
would be precisely as reliable -- no more, no less. It could even be argued
that by combining the two in a circuit you would be doubling the chance of a
failure.

There are already two failsafes against operating the OD in reverse -- the
driver-operated switch, and the lockout switch. A third is scarcely
necessary, IMO. The "OD-on" lamp is a useful reminder, however.
