Oliver,
I don't think anyone mentioned this. Have you opened the coolant drain on
the engine? It is located near the distributor. Many times there is rusty
sludge and gunk collected in this passageway which prevents the coolant
mixture from draining out of the engine. If you have a blockage here, it
could be restricting the coolant circulation.
If you find a blockage, get a wire hanger and probe it up into the drain to
loosen up the blockage. Continue until the blockage clears and coolant flows
freely.
