Is the 'Crack of Doom' common to all MGBs? Is my '79 susceptible, or was it
eventually cured by manufacturing changes?

 Yes, but it doesn't have anything to do with the mirror.
 It's caused by the unit body flexing, which causes the
 windshield frame to press against the wing window assembly,
 which in turn presses against the door skin.  Classic
 stress-induced metal fatigue.
