Hi Bjorn & Morganeers:
Sounds interesting.
That Volvo gearbox is designated as the M40 without OD and the M41 with
OD. The gearbox itself is from Volvo, but the OD is a Laycock De
Normanville from UK. Now, Volvo used 2 different types of Laycock OD:
The D type in the earlier cars up through around 1968-69, and then the J
type OD in the later cars. In Volvo circles, the J type is recognized as
a better choice. Gearbox tops with shifter mechanism are interchangeable
among the various boxes, depending on the car use. Earlier cars such as
the Amazon (122s in USA) and the 544 used a long shifter right out of
the top of the box. Later cars (140 series after 1972 and P1800 cars)
used a remote shifter. This is likely the choice to use in the Morgan.

The 1970 1800E and the 164 cars used a heavier duty gearbox called the
M400 (w/o OD) or the M410 (with OD). These are somewhat less readily
available.

There now! More than you wanted to know about Volvo gearboxes.

Best to you all for the new year.
