Chas and Brad... on my 1991 +8, the heater knob pushed in turns off the
heat, and pulled out allows coolant water to flow through the heater core.
This, located under the dash, above the steering column. There is also the
vent knob in the foot well, over the transmission hump, which directs the
heater air down or up through the defroster vents. The switch in the
dashboard (fascia) switch assembly operates the two-speed fan. I usually
turn the fan on half speed, and push the heat control knob all the way in
for foot well ventilation on hot summer runs.

Brad -

On my +8 (1977), the heater valve is off when the knob is pulled out and
turns on when it's pushed forward. There are two small metal flaps to close
off the heater box outlets in warm weather.

Like you noted, there always seems to be some residual hot air coming from
out of the heater vent openings but closing the flaps stops that or at least
sends it up to the defroster outlets where it mixes with cool outside air.
