In both the truck and the VWs we own, we use wheel bearing grease and
hypoid (90wt-tranny) oil,
about 3 to 1; mix into a nice firm goo. Many rebuilts come with this, at
least on the VWs.

In fact, due to the ancient seals in the thing, we may try out this combo
in the tranny (more like 1:1 ratio in there, tho).
