The # you gave sounds like the casting date which is located just
above/behind starter. If so you correctly deciphered it. The casting # is
different from this-it has seven digits and is usually located forward of
distributor and behind fuel pump.
I also though all '54's had the water pump located the same as the 216.
The plane of the head should be in the middle of the pump. I was waiting to
hear if anyone else had any idea's. Wonder if the '54 Corvette used the
later style block block.
