Having only just joined the list and gave what I considered to be useful
advice I received a number of responses to my reply about brake fluid, one of
which I can only describe as RUDE. My reply on oil coolers only drew one
reply so is obviously less contentious though the reply was again what I can
only describe as RUDE - but then again it was from the first RUDE people.

Let me say that if you guys have problems with DOT 3 fluid I can't argue with
that. BUT, I cannot understand why? In England where these little cars were
first invented and made there are no recorded problems with short brake seal
life or brake fluid problems that I have ever come across when using DOT 3
fluid. The brakes were designed to be used with DOT 3 fluid because no other
fluid had been invented at that time. In England I only know of one
particular brand of brake fluid that is definitely suspect in causing problems
with seals and it is not widely available. There is a second brand that I
also would not personally use.

However, there are several brands of DOT 3 fluid that I used for many years in
my Sprite without a single problem EVER. I only changed to a DOT 4 and later
a DOT 5.1 when the performance of my car was such that I experienced brake
fading problems when using uprated friction material.

I can add that I have a vast amount of data I have gathered over the years
relating to brake fluid from the manufacturers such as Castrol, Girling, and
AP and although there is some interesting comment relating to Silicone fluids
the comment relating to DOT 3 is that it is kinder on the seals than DOT4.

>From what you guys say across the pond you do have a problem with DOT 3 fluid
and I would be very interested to hear what brands you use. If you reply
really quick I will take the questions with me to AP Racing who it just so
happens I am visiting midday tomorrow.

As for the guys that are RUDE - I have broad shoulders and there just might be
a couple of thousand enthusiasts who would not agree with your opinion, let
alone your manners.

Daniel
