My $.02 to the general chatter:

Engineering Maxims:

As American as:  Build it so it has no choice but to work.
 
As British as: It doesn't have to work in the damp.
 
As Japanese as: It doesn't have to work as long as we can export it.
 
 As German as: It doesn't have to work it as long as it's overly complicated.
 
 As Italian as: It doesn't have to work as long as it looks good.
 
 As Canadian as: It's ok with us as long as the Americans like it and it drives 
in the snow.
 
 As French as: It doesn't have to work as long as it is different and French.
 
 As Swiss as: It may work, but it's expensive.
