I haven't read all the posts yet, but may I add that the incidences of self
defense by firearm ownership is immeasurable because the cases where someone
was detered by just the possibility that a person may have the means to
defend themselves cannot accurately be counted.
Also, in Canada ( in Ottawa ) a reporter went out to prove how firearms are
bad and set out to try to purchase a handgun on the black market. He had
one for less than market value and with no paperwork hassles in less than 24
hours.
Careful when you are using the results of polls that you find out what the
question posed was. The Liberal government in getting 56% support for its
latest round of gun control, had the polling company ask people if they were
in favour of gun control. Simple. There was no questions or information
that would allow comparisons based on the people's knowledge of existing
rules and/or whether they might think that existing controls were adequate.
Tell me if I am wrong that it was a well meaning government that had the
citizens of pre-WWII Germany register their firearms and if some infamous
subsequent leader of that country then used that information to his
advantage.
In my world, governments are to serve me, not to rule me.

I agree totally. Yes, we do have the 'right'... for now. But slowly,
bite by bite, they are (trying) to take it away.
In a recent television show that centered on counties where gun control
laws were in place, all those that interviewed encouraged other
countries not to vote for control. Interesting, since the majority of
voters thought it a good idea at one time, but now only the criminals
have guns and they have no way to protect themselves. Very much akin to
what Mike L. said in his post.
