Loneliest Highway is Highway 50, starting at Carson City and ending up
somewhere in Utah, where it merges into I-70. The part between Carson City
and Ely is of most interest here. Bob and another guy in a Miata ran it last
fall. Ely is about 250 miles from Vegas via US 93, looks like Fallon NV is
another 250-275 miles on US 50 and there you can branch off on US 95 back
down to Vegas, which is at least another 250 miles. At least the first two
legs are pretty in desert terms, we have never been on the third, but think
it should also be pretty and interesting.

You should plan any running around out here carefully. There is nothing
except scenery out here. No gas stations between towns, no Golden Arches.
Nothing. Scenery, but you can't drink scenery. I suggest at a minimum a
couple of bottles of water and take your cell phone--it might help. There is
an abandoned RR Station at Ely that was used until the end of WW II. It is
open to the public.

Grand Canyon (south rim), Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Death Valley National Parks
are near to Vegas, and are some of the most popular parks.
