>>I was talking about it the other day, how when I was young the guys at
parts stores all were into cars and now, at least near me, they're
basically places where you can get something as long as it's the stock
item and you know the year make and model<<

I ran into this the other day when looking for a part for my F150. The
power window gave up and wouldn't go back up but the motor was still
humming away so it was still functional. I did a quick check on the web
and found out that it's a common problem and an aftermarket "gear kit"
is available. I had seen them on e-bay and on other websites but I
wanted to get it repaired soon.

I called various "local" parts stores (not the chains) and got responses
from, "I've never heard of that" to "No, you have to replace the whole
motor" and "yewah, we list it but I gotta order it". I called my local
"speed shop" (they also sell regular replacement parts) and the finished
my sentence when I started to describe what I needed. They had it in
stock and cheaper than anyone else quoted. These guys are "car guys" and
not just drag race gear heads (it's a well known place locally called
Vic Hubbard, www.vichubbard.com ). Last time I was in there buying parts
for my Ford I found out the counter guy had an MGB he was restoring. So
there are local places with people who are knowledgeable (and with
varied car interests!) but sometimes you just may have to search.
