Right you partly were.  It was the elusive double problem, timing too 
advanced causing hard starting, defective taiwanese fuel regulator starving the 
motor.

Going to set the timing, my manual specifies 10 btdc for a stock motor at 
idle, is this considered suitable for a weber/crane 700/slight compression 
increase/ATP cam motor as well?
