Hi Bobbie,

You're probably never going to believe this, but please remember that I
worked as an animal control officer for over ten years and have done
extensive research on dog bites, their causes, and prevention. I drafted
the Cowlitz County, WA vicious dog ordinance, helped draft the Lane County
vicious dog ordinance, and taught dog bite prevention classes to the USPS.

The one breed of dog that is LEAST likely to attack a human, of any dog
breed in the world, is the pit bull. The old time dog fighters would
actually get in the pit while their dogs were fighting and any dog that bit
its handler, no matter how badly it was hurt, was destroyed on the spot.
This practice, no matter how abhorrent, has created a breed of dog that, by
nature, does NOT attack humans.

Where problems develop is the class of people who own the breed for its
strength and tenacity and "train" their dogs to become "guard dogs". A pit
bull should never receive protection training. They are naturally
protective and fully capable of subduing a burglar without putting a tooth
mark on him. There are numerous documented cases of this happening, but
these don't make good headlines.

Drug dealers use pits to protect their property and not only train them to
be vicious toward humans, but pump them full of methamphetamines. Over 90%
of the pits that attack humans are psychotic due to both the drugs and the
training methods that are used.

Please don't blame the breed because of irresponsible owners. It is not the
dogs' fault. You will never find a better family dog than a properly bred
and socialized pit bull.

Kate
