IMHO, it all comes down to supply and demand. The Midgets "were" in demand, and
there is a huge supply of them. The Sprite rolled off the line at a lesser rate,
thus, fewer. Couple that, with the Austin Healey name, which conjures visions of
expensive cars. But our beloved little Sprite, is looked upon by many (not all)
big Healey owners, in much the same fashion as the 914 is looked at by the
Porsche crowd. Both were economical versions of the marque, and as such, allowed
the "poor" into the ownership circle.
I say "F*ck 'em". I love my car. They can all kiss my ass. (those that look
down on the Spridget owners that is)
When I became inflicted with the disease, owning an "Austin Healey" was not my
ultimate goal. I wanted a "street legal go-cart". I later got a Sprite, for a
good deal. I later got a bugeye, also for a good deal. Not because it was an
Austin Healey, but because the bugeye has personality. I am not saying that I am
ashamed of owning a Healey, but it isn't a status builder for me. I am just
thankful I don't own a 1500 series car!!!
Just kidding guys, we all rib each other over what we think is our favorite.
I tried to be a good Healey owner, and be a member of a national organization.
After a few years of reading the club magazine devoted almost entirely to the
larger brother, I discontinued my membership. I have had several folks tell me
that we need to write articles about our cars, and submit them to the magazine.
I don't know what everyone on this list does, but I am a humble woodworker, I am
NOT an author.
Anyway, I got off track. Bill, Midgets = many, Sprites = few. The fewer there
are, the more they cost. Imagine trying to buy an Innocenti.........
